Genre
The soundtrack can sometimes depict where a movie is taking place and it doesn't necessarily have to be a country but a place. If its Paris we will hear the accordion because that's the main instrument they use in France.
If it were set in the beach or hot sides of the Caribbean we would hear steel drums because when we think of or hear about the Caribbean we think of that instruments sound.
It doesn't always mean the location of course, the soundtrack can dictate the pure genre of the film. If we hear the toy sound machine, violin or cello in a opening would usually can tell it is something horror based. Even if its crooked piano playing. and i shall provide an example.
This is an example of explaining the genre through just the music. :The visual doesn't give us much to go on however its only because of the soundtrack is why i know its horror. The violins screech gets louder with every second and gives off enigma codes as to what's going to happen, even if its just in the opening.
Time Period/location
You can tell by a soundtrack usually what time period films are set in. For the me devil times they might use flutes and trombones to give it that hero VS villan quest feel to it and by that familiar sound we know it has something to do with med-evil times. If you were to hear a lute which is a med- evil times or a citole. A citole is for more when a med-evil movie starts in a cavern because this is the type of instruments they would use for entertainment.
This is the kind of music you would hear in a med-evil opener if the first shot was in a civilized area however they would add much more emphasis on certain parts to make it more interesting to listen to as the visuals pass by. We wouldn't hear a modern movie like my super ex girlfriend with this soundtrack because the soundtrack doesn't portray that visual and it throws off the audience.
