The Analysis
The Font of the credits
If we have a look at the font we can see that they take advantage of ancient things like swords and incantation symbols and then implement them within the text to make the text have a sort of mysterious and attractive look to it. They haven't mad the text so big This also represent and connotes he genre because symbols like that aren't used in modern times (and if it is its usually a horror but ill get to this in the soundtrack section) so from a first impression im going to think this has something to do with:
Ware: Because of the spar through the "S, A, Y" In "Duncy" (in the example image) and they only used spars in the ancient times as weapons, near the gladiator age.
Pagen rituals: I would have
this text from someone who knows nothing of this film by doing so the symbols kind of resemble that of the ancient egyptian text:
See this, the text in the writing does have a striking resemblance
But then of course this text could be from ancient rome because they also use The spears and swords and the symbols do resemble ancient roman text. I think of both Egypt and gladiators when looking at the credits. Also makes me think of sacrifice because in the ancient times they did a lot of offering to their gods by killing someone and offering them as a token.
Roman Text
Where the font is placed
They have managed to make good use of where the text is place. Simple text conventions made this more effective. Using the image i have provided as an example, they haven't put the text bang in the middle, no, they have put it in the top right so that we can see the animation clearly and also put it where the sun is. This could connote superiority since the sun is in the highest place n the sky. Suggests his position and contribution the he movie was exceptional. To enforce this statement the have put the Producer in this credit provided. At least it looks like a sun and thats what they want you to think. It actually looks like blood splatter
They have cleverly used text conventions in other parts in the sequence
They have put the producer role near he horse suggesting some sort of superiority to other since it plays a huge part in wars. However we go on to the Executive producer and the text is near the soldier riding the cart and controlling the horses. Also the sun expands as the credits moves onto "Executive producer"further suggesting its higher rank to the normal producers.
The visuals
Style
The main theme style here a a samurai type of art style and i think they did this to confuse the the viewer since so many different ancient cultures are suggested in this sequenc. We spoke about egyptian, roman and now japanese. The dragons and snakes have an oriental feel to them as they relate to different Japanese and chinese fighting styles. Then again for someone who hasn't watched this they could then think that this film represent the greatest history discoveries in exotic or well known countries.
Colour scheme
They seem to take advantage of red and black to connote death, despair grief. and whats even better is that they implement these colours on the actual animals and back ground. Red for the dragon could connote a quick and painless death, the black for the snake could represent a slow agonising painful and dreadful death. since snakes's venom kill slowly.
How we can tell that something ancient is involved
The main thing that made me think straight away that this has something to do with the ancient times of the world is the fireballs from the dragon. They could have been a decoration for the title sequence but if that were the case the dragons wouldn't necessarily e breathing fire. Instead they made us see what a dragon is capable of. If they wanted to show u a time line of events they probably wouldn't have implemented the dragons breathing fireballs because there wouldn't be enough time to fill in that animation.
They do look like meteorites though and meteorites destroy quite a lot of its surroundings so this may be connoting the lost history and that in this movie the heroes wish to uncover the truth of history.
They establish the contrast of both worlds
The gem shattering could mean the end of the ancient age and as we zoom into the shattered gem we then are doomed out of a letter or symbol of an language which is engraved in the mountain is probably is trying to signify that history is written in stone and nothing can change it regardless of people trying to cover it up. We then move onto the aeroplane which is a modern transportation, already we know that the title sequence has now one a time skip to the present time.
Not just that, but the colour scheme changes from red skies to white clear skies signifying a more neutral and civilised age which has only gotten better over the years. Since the film is called mummy, a portion of the audience will be thinking that the plane means people are out to explore the lost history that must be found.
Subtle hints to the films genre
the soundtrack: These type of instruments (Trumpet, steel base drum/normal drums, trombones and violins) Used in a high pitch and up beat manner would then tell us that this has something to do with exploration and adventure but of course we then have the visuals which go against that and in saying that this would mean this film has more than one genre.
Zelda 25th anniversary orchestra: Comparing the title sequences orchestra against an adventure based game, there are many similarities to the instruments and melodies, Overall the melody sounds adventurous and the right instruments are needed to give you tat sense of nostalgia about other movies you may have seen with this type of orchestra in it. one you think about the other orchestra/music you then think of what movie it was that you saw and then you relate that to this film. Its a very smart and creative idea they used.
Brendan Fraser: He is know to be i a lot of comedy/ adventure movies and we can use this information on this actor to anticipate the genre even further along with the style, theme and visuals. we would instantly rate all these movies to the mummy and instantly think it has adventure involved and action an all.
